Dear Everyone,

Thank you for coming to this blog.  Today I am going to post an old home movie link.  I didn't have the tools to edit the movie so I have to show it to you in it's entirety.  If you wait long enough you might see yourself.  At a little less than three minutes into the film, you can see church video from probably close to 1968 and early 70's, plus some pictures of the Gretna High School Band performing in a parade in Lynchburg, Virginia.  In the church videos, watch for Shirley Owen, Pete Shelton, Ruth Shelton, Laurie, Joan and Susan.  I think I saw Alice too, but I am not sure.  There is Claude and Mae Owen, Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew, the minister Roy Parker and his wife, Ann.  It looks like their son Timmy is in the video also.  Shirley Kinsley and Joe Kinsley and a short clip of their sons sitting at the table.  Thee are many familiar faces in the two video clips, just keep searching.

Thirty six years ago on April 20, 1975, the Minister for the church was the Reverend Landon B. Spradlin.  Mrs. Martha Crawley was the pianist.

My mother saved bulletins from certain Sunday services and today I am posting the April 24, 1988 bulletin.
Over twenty three years ago this coming Sunday the Reverend Melvin Bobbitt was the minister and the music was by Linda Dalton.
The Invocation was delivered by Joe Kinsley.
The Deacons serving on that day were Oscar Kennedy, Dalton Harris, Jeff Abbott and Dick Lassiter.

The Choir sang the song, "Father, We Rest In Thy Love".

There was a scheduled reception for May 22 for Reverend Bobbit and his wife.

Revival began that night with Reverend John Wallace as the speaker.  The Choir from First Baptist Church in Gretna were the guest music for that night.  Gretna Christian Church Choir were scheduled for Monday night, the men form Oak Grove Christian on Tuesday, Liberty Choir on Wednesday, The Meadows Sisters on Thursday, The Joyful Sounds from Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church were scheduled for Friday.

Just that next Sunday there was a scheduled workshop for the CWF/CMF at Rocky Mount Christian Church.

This is definitely a busy active church.

This is the piano in the sanctuary which needs to be replaced.  It's a nice piano, but it is no longer holding it's tune.  So if anyone wants to contribute, please send to the address of the church above.  You can contribute in the memory of someone or just contribute.  Thank you.

This picture is hanging in the educational building.  It is a picture of a baptism.

The above is the educational building which I have talked about frequently.  This is where all the meetings, receptions and parties are held.  Imagine those tables loaded with food during our homecoming.  We have some of the best cooks in the  state.

More notes from the CWF meetings.  I believe that this is 1962 or 1963 of October.  The president was Mrs. Neal.  Mary Morrison conducted the devotions with the theme "You Have To Listen".  The ideas expressed that we often receive the expression of love without hearing the words of love spoken.  Mrs. Morrison gave the offertory prayer.
Mrs. Alice Eastham presented the program about the Spanish Speaking Church of the Disciples.
Afterwards, a business meeting was held.
Discussion on contributions for members to go to Craig Springs was discussed and several members discussed volunteer work that they had performed in the neighborhood.
The CWF finished a quilt which they gave to Maxine Rowland and they discussed the new quilt they would be beginning.
Plans were made for the Christmas Party and the location.  Mrs. Neal was placed in charge of finding more information.
The meeting was adjourned and Mrs. Morrison and Mrs. Kennedy served refreshments using a Halloween theme.

Craig Springs is a retreat which is owned and operated by the Disciples of Christ.  It is located in New Castle, Virginia.  It is a wonderful place.  I certainly enjoyed going there when I was a teenager. For more information on Craig Springs see the below link.

The CWF held it's regular monthly meeting at the Educational Building on January, 1965.  Ivalee Dalton was in charge of the program which was "A Young Person's Choice".  Mrs. Belle Mayhew had the worship.
A quilt was given to Mrs. Sandra Crider.
Savings Stamps were asked to be saved so that they could get new items for the church.  Mrs. Belle Mayhew said that she would take communion for February. Plans were discussed for Vacation Bible School.  Each one was asked to bring a roll of bandages for hospitals in India.
Thank you notes were read and another discussion was held on the World Call.  The meeting closed with a benedication.
Refreshments were served by Gladys Kennedy and Ilene Kennedy

Note from me.
In case anyone out there doesn't know about Green Stamps, I will explain.  From the 1930s and in some places up until 1980, retailers, grocers and gas stations would give you stamps for how much you spent in their store.  For instance, for every dollar spent you may get one stamp. Everyone had a green stamp book and after they had accumulated so many books they could go to the S&H green stamp store and purchase something.  They also published a catalogue.
I remember a very funny joke by a fellow called Vaughn Meador.  He cut a joke record back in the 1960s about the Kennedy family.  He described the huge motorcade driving up to the gas pump.  President Kennedy says to the gas attendant, "Do you give Green Stamps?"  The gas attendant replies, "No."  To which the President of the United States tells the motorcade to move on.  May not be funny to you, but back then it was hilarious.
